Cotton lasts for years if you treat it right, and falls apart in months if you do not. Seven things that matter.
Cold water protects colour and stops fibres breaking down. Turning the garment inside out keeps the outer face from rubbing against the drum.
Darks with darks. New deep shades - navy, wine red, forest green - can bleed on the first two or three washes.
Bleach breaks cotton fibres and will yellow whites over time. For stains, treat the spot directly rather than the whole garment.
Direct Indian sun fades cotton fast, especially reds and yellows. Line dry in shade and the colour lasts years rather than months.
Heat is what actually shrinks cotton. If you must use a dryer, keep it on low and pull the garment out slightly damp.
A warm iron is enough. If the style has a print or an embroidered elephant, iron around it or turn the garment inside out.
Hanging heavy cotton tees stretches the shoulders over time. Fold knitwear and tees; hang only the shirts.
